Sheds come down in whatever shape they are in. A wood shed with a rotted floor and a sagging roof comes apart in pieces. A rusted metal shed gets unbolted and the sheeting stacked flat. Vinyl and plastic sheds break down fast once the roof panels come off.
Some sheds are still packed full when we get there. The inside can be cleared out first and leave with the rest. Doors, windows and roofing come off by hand, then the walls follow. The skid steer does the lifting and the loading, and a big shed gets the excavator.
Tight city back yards and sloped South Hills lots mean more hand work. If the building is really a garage, that work sits on our garage demolition page instead. Sheds often have a buried electric line run out from the house. Pennsylvania's One Call law does not cover a private line that only serves your own property.
Sheds sit on three kinds of base, and each one ends a little differently. A wood floor on skids or a treated frame comes out with the shed. Block piers under the corners get pulled and hauled. A concrete slab is its own piece of work, and it can stay or it can go.
Breaking a pad out is concrete removal work. Air jackhammers open the slab up and the skid steer loads the broken pieces. Old footings around the edge come out with it. Pennsylvania counts uncontaminated brick, block and concrete from demolition as clean fill, so that material has somewhere to go.
Some people want to keep the pad for a new shed or a parking spot. We can leave it in place and cut the old anchors off flush. When the slab is broken up and heaving, most people have it come out with the shed.
A free standing deck comes down much like a shed. One attached to the house is different work. The ledger board bolted to the wall has to come off without tearing up what stays. Footers and posts get pulled out of the ground and the holes get filled.
Porches and old exterior stairs come off the same way. Pittsburgh has one of the oldest housing stocks in the country, with a median build year of 1942. EPA's renovation rule covers work on part of an existing structure, like a porch pulled off a pre-1978 house. Above ground pool removal runs on the same visit. The water gets drained first, then the liner, the walls and the frame come apart. Any deck or set of steps built around the pool leaves with it. The sand or stone base underneath gets spread out or hauled off, and the yard gets raked.
