We are a demolition contractor based in Pittsburgh, and demolition is most of the work we do. We take whole structures down: houses, garages, sheds and small commercial buildings. We also take buildings apart from the inside, down to the studs or back to the shell. Boilers, furnaces and other mechanicals come out too, and concrete removal covers the driveways, patios and slabs.

Most jobs run the same way. We come out, look at what is being removed and give you a price before any work starts. Then the permits and the utility disconnects get sorted out, and we go over who handles each step. After that the structure comes down.

Whatever comes off the job leaves with us. Construction and demolition debris is loaded out and hauled away, which is our debris removal and hauling work. The site gets left clean, and on a teardown that can mean the lot graded, topsoiled and seeded.

How we work

We know how buildings go together

Davis Demolition and Masonry has been in the demolition business since 2001. The work runs from whole house teardowns down to one wall taken out inside a kitchen. Behind it sits a building background, and that shows up most on interior work.

On a gut out we can read the load paths, the joists, the plumbing stacks, the wiring and the ductwork. What has to go comes out. What is holding the house up stays, and the trade coming in behind us can work off what is left.

Demolition and masonry sit under one company here. A repair that starts with taking something apart does not need two contractors. The same company takes a failed wall or chimney down and builds it back in brick, block and stone. We run our own excavator, skid steers and air jackhammers, and the site is left clean at the end.

Do I need a permit to demolish a house or garage in Pittsburgh?
Inside the city, yes. The city requires a demolition permit to take down a whole building or structure, or part of one. That permit comes from the Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections. A structure accessory to a house, like a detached garage, can be done under a building permit instead. Outside the city, the borough or township code office sets the rule. We check with that office before the job.
How do you price a demolition job?
Price comes down to the size of the structure and what it is built of. How hard the site is to reach matters, and so does how much debris comes off it. A slab or a basement underneath adds to it. Permits, utility disconnects and any survey work add their own steps. We look at the job and give you a price before any work starts.
What areas do you work in?
We are based in Pittsburgh and work about 40 miles around the city. That covers the city itself, the South Hills, the eastern suburbs, and Washington and Westmoreland counties. Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Whitehall, McMurray, Canonsburg, Washington, Monroeville, Penn Hills, Murrysville and Irwin are all in range.
Do you handle asbestos?
No. In Allegheny County the Health Department regulates all forms of asbestos. It requires a thorough asbestos survey by a licensed building inspector before most demolitions. Anything found has to be taken out first by an ACHD-licensed asbestos abatement contractor, and we demolish after that. Private owners of residential buildings with four or fewer units are exempt from that county rule. Commercial, institutional and public buildings are not.
What happens to the utilities before a demolition?
They get shut off, capped or otherwise controlled outside the building line before demolition starts. The utility companies are notified. That is the OSHA rule for electric, gas, water, steam and sewer service, and licensed trades do the disconnects. Buried lines get marked too. Pennsylvania's One Call law asks for notice three to ten business days before demolition begins. We go over who handles each step when we price the job.
Do you do interior demolition for contractors and investors?
Yes, and a lot of the work is exactly that. Contractors, investors, landlords and homeowners bring us in to gut a house down to the studs. Others want only part of it taken out. We work to the schedule on site and handle added scope as it comes up. Our interior demolition page covers what comes out and what stays.
